Currently, alcohol is the psychoactive substance most commonly used by adolescents. Since, the consumption of alcohol in excess is associated with many social, economic and health problems. Epidemiological studies on alcohol consumption in northern Brazil are scarce. Based on this, this study investigated the prevalence of alcohol consumption among high school students in the municipality of Breves, Pará. This cross-sectional study was conducted in the four high schools of Breves, where students filled out structured questionnaires for description and analysis of socio-demographic, economic and family related to alcohol consumption. The chi-square (2) and Odds Ratio (OR) were used to indicate and quantify the contribution of associated with alcohol consumption factors. Among the 3,218 students enrolled, 1,828 agreed to participate in this study. The age range was 14-52 years old, female predominance (55.9%) being detected. The prevalence of experimentation and regular use of alcohol was 26.3% 34.3%, respectively. The average age of the regular users of alcohol was 19.6 years, with the first drink usually consumed around 15.6 years. Factors associated with alcohol use among students were: age over 17, low paternal education, reduced parental involvement in the school life of their children-students studying in the evening shift, lag in the study, parents who have drink, have friends and family who drink and have most or all friends and family who drink. The prevalence of students who consume alcohol is relatively high in the municipality of Breves compared to other places in Brazil.
