There are some mathematical models to describe transversely anisotropic cracked medium, two important ones are the second order model described by Hudson (1986), and the first order static model by Cheng (1978). In this work, using Cheng’s first order model, we analyze the sensitivity of the stiffness tensor coefficients with respect to changes in the crack’s aspect ratio, for fixed values of the crack densities. Then we constructed synthetic rock samples simulating transversely isotropic cracked media. The velocities measured from these samples are used for comparison with the velocities calculated from the stiffness tensor coefficients obtained via Cheng’s model. The comparisons shows that Cheng’s model satisfyingly predicts the behavior of the velocities, besides, it approximates better the experimental results for small crack densities, as expected. The velocities measured from various angles in each sample are used to calculate Thomsen‘s parameters (THOMSEN, 1986) and quantify the anisotropy of the medium as function of crack density, our results suggests that the anisotropy increases with crack density. The derivatives of the stiffness tensor coefficients with respect to crack’s thickness shows us that the coefficients c11, c33 and c66 tend to decrease with crack’s thickness increase, and the coefficients c44 and c13 have mixed behavior, it is also shown that samples with fluid filled cracks are more sensible to variations in crack thickness.
