Acesso em:.https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/8693Thisstudy discusses the expression “ele é canoa” (he is a canoe) by making a comparison and/or a predication about constructing an attribute, from the perspective of functional linguistics (GIVÓN, 1995) and cognitive semantics (LAKOFF; JOHNSON, 1980; SOUZA, 1984), focusing on the phenomena of conceptual metaphor in studies on linguistic recycling (Oliveira, 2020). Its objective is to analyze “The metaphorical relationship of the term ‘canoe’ in the construction of predication”. This is a qualitative and bibliographical research. The research corpus was composed of data extracted from spontaneous interactions on the WhatsApp application, collected between the months of September and November 2023. The analysis revealed that terms from the common lexicon can be reinterpreted in specific communicative situations, as in the case of the expression “Ele é canoa”, which undergoes a process of linguistic recycling, acquiring new meanings according to the sociocultural practices of the speakers.
