The installation of mining ventures is increasing every year, favored by the rapid economic growth that Brazil faced in recent years. The extraction of sand for immediate use in construction, especially in the Rio Paraiba do Sul river waterway, has considerably affected the hydraulic flow of it. While mining provides the dredging of the river-bed, the scarcity of basic preliminary studies and without monitoring has generated many conflicts, resulting in the assessment of environmental impacts of sand extraction. The present study aimed to evaluate the influence of mining activities in the river dynamics of a certain portion of the Paraiba do Sul River, at the city of Tremembé. They were analyzed through cross sections to one section of the river enclosed in three ports of sand, where it was detected significant availability of sediment, with rapid replacement of the active areas. Thus the environmental quality in the studied stretch of the Paraíba do Sul River is seriously compromised in terms of unbalances caused by human activities such as mining and agro-pastoral activities.
