The textbook is an important source for analysis, and the works collected from public schools were: Saber Mais Collection, Expedições da História, História Doc, História, Sociedade & Cidadania, Jornadas Novos Caminhos História, and Viver História. However, the analysis proposed here adopts theoretical perspectives that seek to reinterpret sugar. Far from treating it merely as a commercial product, which is the predominant view in school textbooks, this study investigates its social and cultural ramifications within History Teaching. In this context, the textbook assumes the role of a guiding thread for the study, since the analysis of the collected books makes it possible to identify several perspectives for different discussions on the sugar-related theme. From this point, the teaching possibilities allow for an understanding of sugar beyond its condition as an export product. In this way, the history of food becomes a path for deepening the discussion about marginalized subjects who, although inserted in this context and playing a crucial role in history, are often silenced or only briefly discussed in the analyzed chapters. These individuals are active agents of their own history. Thus, the histories developed from sugar carry perspectives capable of arousing students’ interest by enabling discussions about a history of food that is rarely addressed in textbooks. In this sense, sugar is a popular food that carries a rich historical significance through recipes for cakes, sweets, and candies that preserve memories and stories.
