Acesso em:.https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/9311The present study analyzed the conditions of access to drinking water in the Nova Esperança community, located on João Pilate Island, municipality of Ananindeua (PA). The qualitative and exploratory investigation used bibliographic research, documentary analysis, participant observation and application of semi-structured questionnaires to understand socio-spatial inequalities and the survival strategies adopted by the population. The results highlight a paradox typical of the Amazon: in the midst of natural water abundance, the community faces extreme precariousness in the supply infrastructure, without a public distribution network. Water quality is compromised, and home treatments, such as boiling and filtration, are insufficient to ensure microbiological and chemical safety. The research identified that the lack of safe and dignified access to water is the result of a historical negligence of the public authorities and the omission in sanitation policies, configuring socio-environmental injustice and the violation of the human right to water. From the perspective of environmental justice, the distribution of water reflects power relations that marginalize peripheral territories. However, the community demonstrates resilience and social capital, developing autonomous strategies for managing the resource and manifesting a willingness to take collective action. It is concluded that there is an urgent need for integrated, intersectoral and participatory public policies, which overcome the logic of territorial marginalization and effectively guarantee the fundamental right to water. It is essential that urban and sanitation planning incorporate local realities and knowledge, recognizing riverside and island communities not as mere beneficiaries, but as central protagonists in the construction of sustainable and equitable solutions, essential for socio-environmental justice in the Amazon.
