Such difficulty can be explained by the varied etiology, by the influence of patient‘s systemic and local factors and, still, by the doubt in the treatment selection. For the preparation of this work, articles were collected from the PubMed database and from the Wiley Online Library, using the following Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS): furcation defects, periodontal diseases and tooth loss. Thereafter, the exclusion or inclusion of publications was based on the abstract and classification of journals by Plataforma Sucupira (CAPES). Based on the analysis of the literature, the etiologies for making the differential diagnosis were exposed, the influence of systemic and local factors was assessed and the therapeutic modalities were described with their respective prognoses. It was concluded that teeth with furcation involvement can achieve high long-term survival rates.
