Aspects such as the complex interaction between human occupation and the environment, exploitation of natural resources, environmental degradation and social inequality were related to land use and cover. The disorderly occupation, driven by migration and population growth, worsened infrastructure and health problems. The construction of the Enéas Pinheiro Bridge in 1986 accelerated urban expansion, bringing new neighborhoods, but intensifying environmental and social issues. IBGE data and satellite images show the loss of native vegetation, the advance of urbanization and the scarcity of agricultural areas. Drainage channel mapping provides crucial information to minimize flooding.
