Acesso em:.https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/9899Minimum-dose resistance training (RT) protocols, characterized by low training volume and shorter execution time, may be effective in increasing strength, coordination, and functional capacity in people with Parkinson’s disease (PwPD), especially those with physical limitations or difficulties adhering to conventional exercise programs. The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of a low-volume RT protocol on muscle strength and functional performance in PwPD, with the hypothesis that this type of training could improve both variables. This was a quasi-experimental pilot study involving eight PwPD (63.3 ± 12.1 years), who had been sedentary for at least three months. The RT protocol lasted eight weeks and consisted of two sets of 8–12 repetitions of the 180° leg press, bench press, and seated row exercises. Assessments were conducted before and after the intervention. Muscle strength was evaluated using the 10-repetition maximum (10RM) test on the 180° leg press. Functional performance was assessed using the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test and the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), with separate analysis of the chair stand test score. Assessments were performed on different days. The Shapiro–Wilk test was used to verify data normality, and the paired samples t-test was applied to compare pre- and post-intervention values for the 10RM, TUG, and SPPB variables, with a significance level set at P < 0.05. There was a significant increase in muscle strength, as assessed by the 10RM test (Pre = 63.75 ± 26.15 kg; Post = 102.5 ± 31.51 kg; d = −1.604; P = 0.003). In the SPPB, the mean score of the chair stand test showed a significant improvement (Pre = 1.88 ± 1.13 points; Post = 2.38 ± 0.74 points; d = −0.935; P = 0.033). However, scores related to balance and gait speed did not show significant differences, nor did the TUG test, which showed no changes between the pre- and post-intervention periods. The low-volume minimum-dose RT protocol resulted in a significant increase in muscle strength in PwPD, but its effects on functional performance were limited. These preliminary findings indicate potential benefits of RT for PwPD in the present study. However, considering the limitations, such as the pilot nature of the research and the small sample size, these findings should be interpreted with caution.
