The remote sensing data and photointerpretation products were organized into a geographic information system GIS, to obtain and organize previous geological information of the studied area. The Landsat ETM+ images had their multispectral bands (30 m) merged with the panchromatic band (15 m). Further, the principal components analysis (PCA) was applied to this product. All the studied images were individually analyzed in grayscales and RGB combinations. The QuickBird images were obtained by taking screenshots of the Google Earth platform, which were later orthorectified and combined into a mosaic covering the entire study area. This product was used to produce the logistic map and to extract the detailed drainage network. The Digital Elevation Model (DEM) was reprojected to UTM, WGS84 datum and resampled to 30m. A shaded relief map was generated from the DEM and analyzed using the grayscale or color palette Atlas Shader, which assisted to the extraction of the drainage network. The visualization capabilities of the GIS and vectorial edition combined with the quality of remote sensing data were important to produce a cartographic product at the scale of 1:25000. The photo interpretation activity was based on the Systematic Analysis Method of Soares and Fiori, 1976; Veneziani and Anjos, 1982. This method was efficient and easy to use, allowing producing reliable maps, which greatly facilitated the field validation. The integration of elements of drainage, relief and tone obtained by photo analysis allowed the subdivision of 7 photo interpretation geological units. The elements of the analysis drainage were the most relevant to the subdivision of the units, since the textural frequency of these elements is inversely proportional to the permeability of the outcropping rocks. A total of 8 sedimentary facies were identified at the studied outcrops. They were grouped into 5 facies associations (FA). The Pedra de Fogo Formation shows lacustrine associations(FA1), inland sabkhas deposits (FA2) and eolian dunes (FA3). The Motuca Formation displays only FA lacustrine (FA4) and the FA Sambaíba Formation includes eolian dunes (FA5). The alternation, strong interdigitation of paleoenvironments, tectonic events and erosion, comprise difficulting factors for the geological mapping for paleoenvironments.
