Faced with these transformations, fears and anxieties about childbirth are generally present, which can lead to more difficult labor and become a negative experience for the parturient. However, access to information during prenatal care on the physiology of childbirth is essential if all this fear and yearnings are to be dispelled. The present study aims to know the perception of pregnant women about the physiology of labor and delivery. A descriptive, prospective study with a qualitative-quantitative approach performed with 31 pregnant women enrolled in the Prenatal Program of the Municipal Cremation Health Unit, who met the following criteria for inclusion: literate in the first or second gestation, older than 18 years, of habitual obstetric risk, from the second trimester of gestation. The data were collected through a closed questionnaire with questions of multiple choice and observationally during educational actions carried out in the Unit. The quantitative data were analyzed through descriptive statistics and, qualitatively, through content analysis. Of the 31 participating pregnant women, the majority were less than 35 years old, had completed high school, were in a stable union, were in the second trimester of pregnancy and received nursing care in relation to the medical appointment. On the signs of labor, we can notice similarity in the answers, but the rupture of the pouch was the sign of the beginning of labor more marked by the participants. As for labor time, most point out that there is no definite time. Half of the participants in educational actions believe that they should wait for the contractions to increase to go to the hospital, and the other half understand that when the contractions begin, one must go straight to the maternity ward. Approximately 88% of the participants report some type of fear and longing during labor, and most of them point out as their main fear "to suffer maltreatment by the professionals", followed by the feeling of "pain". In the educational actions carried out, it was observed that the pregnant women had several doubts about the thematic approach and demonstrated ignorance about the physiology of labor, contributing to previous negative experiences. It was observed that educational actions are extremely important during gestation, even if the pregnant woman does not recognize the need to participate, since, in addition to improving knowledge, there is an exchange of experience essential for psychological and physical preparation during labor and childbirth, we also highlight the relevance of new approaches similar to the present study, as a way to improve the scientific knowledge of obstetricians, as well as to provide approaches to assist women and their families in a humanized way.
