Acesso em: .https://bdm.ufpa.br/handle/prefix/9849Over the last decades, the development of Next-Generation Sequencing Technologies (NGS), combined with advances in bioinformatics tools for genome assembly, annotation, and validation, has greatly expanded the availability of complete mitochondrial genomes, enabling comparative analyses of gene organization, nucleotide composition, codon usage, gene rearrangements, and phylogenetic relationships in fishes. Despite these advances, the availability of complete mitochondrial genomes remains uneven among teleost lineages. Within the order Cyprinodontiformes, although some families are relatively well represented, others still lack comprehensive mitogenomic data, limiting comparative studies and inferences regarding their evolutionary history. Among these, the family Anablepidae stands out due to its representatives exhibiting unique morphological and ecological adaptations while remaining poorly studied from a genomic perspective. The species Anableps anableps and Anableps microlepis, commonly known as four-eyed fishes, display a remarkable ocular adaptation characterized by the horizontal division of the cornea and retina, allowing simultaneous vision above and below the water surface. These species inhabit estuarine and coastal environments along the northern coast of South America, play an important ecological role in trophic webs, and have potential as bioindicators of environmental disturbances. However, until now, no complete mitochondrial genomes had been described for these species. To address this gap, the present study provides the complete mitochondrial genome characterization of A. anableps and A. microlepis. Their mitogenomes were assembled, annotated, and characterized with respect to structural organization, nucleotide composition, and gene content, and subsequently compared with other representatives of Cyprinodontiformes to investigate their evolutionary relationships.
